I usually like to get laid off because its an internal voice in my head that tells me I am not a quitter. I am 40+ and have had my fair share of ups and downs in life. I just moved to a new city and needed a job. In the middle of a masters degree and you know how that can be. You do not have the degree but you are educated and employers either want to lowball you or not hire you at all because they think once you do get a degree you will quit or your school work will interfere.
Here are some red flags of why I RESIGNED 1 WEEK after getting hired:
This particular job was in Houston, Texas and I just moved to the city from Miami. Literally my 2nd week here I got a job. Can you imagine how relieved I was! I was absolutely ecstatic when I got hired. The pay was $25 and hour which isnt great but in Houston its definitely good enough to live a somewhat comfortable existence (rent $1000 a month and pay checks are $4400 a month).
Ok the day before I start working they tell me. We will pay you $25 an hour, we just want you to work for $18 an hour during training. I was like ok cool. Training is only for 3 days.
The person that trained me they fired immediately after training me. Then they come back and tell me to work 2 more weeks until I get $25. I resigned the same day. I was willing to do the $18 an hour for a few days but then when they extended it to two weeks, I immediately realized okay, they keep moving the goal post and I am in my 40s. No way are you going to play with me like that.
I should have never accepted the position. I am in this position mostly because I lived out of country for 7 years working remotely in tech. I just got so tired of it (tech is only worth it to me at this point in my life if i own the business). The politics, bs, boredom, and literally staring at my cpu all day in a chair; I been there down that..made money..bought foreign cars...lived a solid life in my 30s because of tech...until one day i woke up and nobody would hire me remotely anymore... its like when covid ended remote tech jobs became a lot more difficult for me to get and I had lost all luster for it.
Just wanted to share my story...the older you get the harder it becomes changing careers but never give up.
