Why do companies ghost or revoke job offers?

Something I’m hearing constantly right now from my network is that candidates going through interviews that seem to go really well, but afterwards getting completely ghosted. Or worse, receiving an offer and then having it revoked as the start date approaches.

In nearly 15 years in the tech industry, I’ve never heard this happen so frequently.

What’s actually going on? Would love to hear from any recruiters — what’s driving this behavior? Are companies just interviewing for compliance and actually having a candidate in mind already? Or are not actually hiring at all?
