Why are employers so picky?

I had an interview last week for an accounting controller job at a small manufacturing company.

I meet all the qualifications of the role, 5.5 years of experience in accounting/finance, CPA, Big 4 audit experience with most of my clients being in manufacturing, industry experience in FP&A with an adjacent industry (they also wanted financial analysis experience so I had that). Only requirement I didn’t meet, which I doubt anyone that applied met was that I didn’t have experience in their ERP software (I’ve never even heard of it, it’s not the usual SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamic 365, etc).

They said they are still interviewing other candidates but wanted to schedule a second interview with me and asked for my availability but I found out later the same day via email that they cancelled it, with the generic “you have not be selected to move forward…”. I checked their LinkedIn and they reposted the job at the same time or maybe shortly before or after they sent me the rejection email.

So it appears that not only did they reject me but they rejected all the other people they interviewed as well. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one that met 90% of their requirements.

I’m just beyond frustrated because I’ve been looking for a new position for 3 weeks now and have only had 3 interviews with 6 rejections despite sending like 60 applications for positions I meet about 90-100% of the requirements.
