I’ll start. In college I worked at a campus convenience store. I was told a start date, manager will provide my employee number on a piece of paper for me on my first day, and someone would be there to train me. I come in and the girl is a college student as well. I introduce myself and ask her what I should do first. She’s super blunt with me and says “clock in on that machine” I asked her where the piece of paper with my employee number was and she looked at me like I had 10 heads and said “I don’t have anything” rolls her eyes and hands me a manual time slip. This is just the beginning :o
She points around the store “showing” where everything is and shows me 2 basic register functions. I tried making small talk but she obviously wanted nothing to do with me. 10 mins into my shift she walks out and sits outside on a bench. I look back and she’s on FaceTime. There was a customer request that required another register function she hadn’t shown me so I had to walk outside and ask her to help. She rolled her eyes, walked in, and started doing the task herself, not explaining anything to me, and walked back outside.
2 hours later she comes back in and tells me she’s going on break. I ask her how long breaks usually are here and she says 30 min. I knew damn well she wasn’t coming back anytime soon. 90 mins go by and she still isn’t back and my shift ends in 30 mins. I start having anxiety cause I have no idea how to close the store. Fast forward about 10 mins till my shift ends and she still isn’t back. I was about to call my manager and ask if I needed to stay an extra hour to close and how closing procedures worked. Right as I was about to call, she comes back. I was relieved. She (rudely) gave me a task to restock the drinks and I did for the remaining 6 mins of my shift.
The next day my manager asked me about her and I was honest with him. He said they’ve been having problems with her lately and he ended up firing her the next day.
I don’t know why someone would leave a brand new employee completely alone with very little instruction on their first day. I’m aware the job isn’t rocket science and I figured it out on my own pretty quickly.
