What to do when HR is the problem?

I was called into the HR department because someone complained that I mentioned that I was former law enforcement. She asked me how many people I tell I'm former law enforcement. I stated I didn't know because I don't just go around saying I'm former law enforcement but if it comes up in conversation, I mention it or if someone asks how I got into the line of work I'm in now, I tell them I started in law enforcement. HR asked me if I could see how people could view law enforcement as offensive. I said no I didn't understand how a profession can be offensive. I said there are good and bad people in all professions. She said I should consider not disclosing my former profession even though I mentioned it in my interview. I find the whole reason for being in HR ridiculous. I can't believe it. People reading this must think "there's got to be more to the story" and there is absolutely not. I was called into HR because someone complained that I said I was former law enforcement. Was HR out of line? If so, who do I report HR to?
