Was told will be W-9 for what I believe is actually W-2

Company wants to classify me as an Independent Contractor (W-9) for probationary 3 month period for this position:

Office Admin (main duties Scheduling and correspondence) •On site •Mon - Fri (9 am - 5 pm) •California

I asked for clarification bc I believe the position should be classified as a W-2 Employee position regardless of probation period.

The company responded they are unsure what gave me the impression the position was a W-2 and that they never discussed it that way. They then explained job responsibilities and the 9 - 5 schedule is not an indicator of W-4 employee status.

Can this be a red flag moving forward with a company like this? Or is this a commonly accepted practice I wasn’t aware of?
