I applied to this startup role a while back (social media/content creator type). ( i charge 13/hr )
The main reason I applied was because the listing mentioned an hourly rate ($7–$15) plus profit sharing so I assumed the profit share was just an added bonus on top of base pay.
The client’s profile also looked kinda legit, only 1 hire, but they spent around $14k and worked 400+ hours with that person. So I thought okay, it seems credible enough. After I applied, he tells me compensation is only based on profit.
No base pay. Like… isn’t that basically a way to get work done for free? Especially in startups where “profit” can easily be delayed, adjusted, or even just… never shown clearly? Also realistically, as a freelancer, what control or visibility would I even have over their revenue/profit numbers? Pretty much none.
I ended up wasting 22 connects on this 😭 Am I overthinking this, or is this actually a red flag?
