Put on a PIP

I work in sales and got put on a PIP today for my performance in February. I only hit 50% of my sales target, but I also only worked half the month. I had preapproved vacation time and I also took a week off for bereavement due to losing a family member, which of course affected performance as well.

Right after being put on a PIP I was also asked to sign a write up for "not providing a safe and professional workplace" This is because back in February there was a day I brought my laptop to work to take notes. Were a very slow location and sometimes can go 2+ hours without seeing a customer. I planned to use this downtime to start taking notes for my class that just started. The manager told me I can't do personal work at work and told me to put my laptop away. I finished the assignment I was doing before putting it away. This is the first thing he mentioned in the write up. The second was about a disagreement we had a few weeks ago.

I'm conveniently placed on a PIP shortly after contacting employee relations regarding some of his actions. He made some insensitive jokes about the member of my family that I lost and afterwards I deciding to no longer have friendly banter with him and only keep things professional and minimally speak to him. Ever since then it seems as if he is targeting me. What should I do?

I've already reached out to HR to ask them to review the write up and the PIP and I have a follow up meeting with employee relations this Friday.

Edit: Outside of February every other month I'm always one of the top 2 reps in the store, so this isn't a consistent issue.
