Gobsmacked. Applicants more qualified than managers

Currently interviewing candidates for a mid-level research role at a biotech company and the shortlisted ones are overwhelmingly overqualified. Not just exceeding all the essential and desired skills, they all have more work experience than my manager who will be overseeing their work 🥹

For context, we are interviewing to replace my colleague who got the role after she dropped out of her PhD. Three years later, this candidate cohort all have phds and 3+ years experience.

This is worrying not only because it reflects the reality of the current job market but also because I don’t think these applicants would become long term valuable assets to the company. With this experience, they will leave in a year for something better and we’d have to rehire.
