I got a job recently through a quick interview process. All the parameters were much better than I expected so when they gave me an offer, of course I took it. I'd been searching for work for 2½ years ever since burnout, low pay, and distrust of my boss after observing her do very slimy things to me and colleagues drove me to leave my last job in 2024.
I was up front with them about the particular experience I lacked and also asked directly what the expectations were of my training because as good as the job sounded, I'm very wary because of my prior situations of getting thrust into high-fail situations. I thought I would be able to settle into the job if given time. I had to give it a shot, at least.
Well, I wasn't given time. Upper management (my boss' boss) stepped in and started micromanaging the trainings, and let me go after 3 days because I wasn't learning the job fast enough and they were planning to throw a lot more at me and they didn't think I could handle it.
Honest to God, I did the best I could. But they were training me on stuff in the morning and expecting me to reproduce the process perfectly that same afternoon. Even before I started I asked my boss if there was anything I could be looking at over the weekend prior to my start date because I knew I would be coming in needing to learn a lot and wanted to get a headstart. I didn't hear back from him.
After this, what little confidence I had was gone. I've been in job search hell for two years and thought I'd finally been given a lifeline only for them to just write me off as not good enough even before I finished a week. I honestly kinda wish the "let's usher all the useless people off the planet" program they're likely gonna start in America soon was rolled out because I'd volunteer. I thought after two years tracking shipments, arranging trucking lanes, and managing a small warehouse, I could get a job doing something else in logistics or even something similar that would pay more than $35K in salary (which just doesn't cut mustard in MD - refer to my reasons for leaving my last job above).
Now I don't know what to do. One of the big problems is I know for a fact I have severe anxiety (been diagnosed before and was on meds for it at one point - in fact, the final straw with my last job was my dosage increasing because my anxiety there got so bad) and I'm fairly sure I might have ADHD, autism, or both (and was really hoping to use this job's health benefits to deep dive on those issues and get whatever help I needed). But my confidence is completely shot. Sure I get that maybe upper management (who weren't involved with my interview process) should have made clearer to HR that what they basically want is someone that's an exact experience match, or given me and my supervisor a bit more time.
But maybe that's just how things are now, and if it is, I'm basically screwed because I can't learn under that sort of time pressure. Even trying to reskill for a new career field after being stonewalled for 2 years, the harder I try, knowing that my livelihood could depend on learning this new thing, the more my brain seems to resist it. I'm kind of at a loss at this point. Ready for Scotty to beam me up, as it were.
