I applied for a position as a bank teller and now they want to do a phone call to learn about my background and experience. How am I supposed to “sell myself” to an employer when I have nothing going for me?
- I’m in my mid 30’s
- I’m introverted
- I worked at a grocery store for almost 5 years. That’s my ONLY work experience.
- I got fired from my job for being late too many times.
- I have a high school diploma and no other education.
- I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety for my entire adult life. I don’t have passions or hobbies and I have no idea what I want to do.
When I applied for the grocery store the process was mostly automated online with one in person interview. I honestly only think I got hired because they needed people badly and the manager seemed to feel pity for me.
I’ve read that you’re supposed to start with an entry level job first, but that’s what the grocery store was supposed to be. The job gave me the most base level “skills” that don’t seem all that impressive or noteworthy. I don’t feel remotely qualified for anything outside of another grocery store but I really don’t want to do that. My job was physically and socially draining and I eventually developed pretty severe burnout.
I just feel trapped.
